Hazel Louise Cawthon was born on October 12, 1930 in Porterdale, GA. She was raised there, alongside her sister, who was also her best friend.
Hazel married the love of her life, Sidney Cawthon (also born and raised in Porterdale) in 1950. They lived in Porterdale until the Army transferred them to Baltimore, MD. Once that assignment was up, they moved back to Porterdale for a short time, then to Atlanta. They were married 29 years, before Sidney's sudden death in 1979. They raised two daughters and gave them a wonderful childhood.
Hazel was a devoted wife and stay-at-home mom, supporting her girls in many activities at school and church. She volunteered as room mother, PTA, and Sunday School teacher. Her teaching style with her girls was strict but she also taught by example, showing them, through love, the importance of using their manners, respecting others, especially their elders, and doing their very best at whatever the task, whether doing chores, helping family or friends, or writing a thank you note.
Hazel was proud to say she had home delivery of The Atlanta Journal from 1950-2025.Reading it, and doing the crossword puzzle was a daily "must".
For the last forty-seven years she lived independently. She enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, watching tv (especially the Braves games and Shark Tank), and being with her family.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney Cawthon; her parents, Hoyt and Thelma Grier; and her sister, Doris Hothem. She is survived by her daughters, Kay Akoubian (Arees), and Susan Cushing (Gary); her four grandchildren, Brandi King, Sydnee Cushing, Caleb Cushing (Sarah), and Seth Cushing (Amy); and six great-grandchildren, Coale Cushing, August Cushing, Alex Edwards, Josie Cushing, Bo Cushing, and Zion King.
A Graveside Service for Mrs. Cawthon will be held Saturday, February 28, 2026, 2:00 P.M., at Lawnwood Memorial Park, 1111 Access Road, in Covington. Friends are invited to visit with the family Saturday, February 28, from 1:00 - 2:00 P.M., at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington.
