Hazel Almond Hagans, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August, 12, 2024 at Lakeside Health and Rehabilitation in Huntersville, NC.
She was born August 10, 1926, in Stanly County to the late Homer Vance and Vetra Sasser Almond. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Alfred James Morton, in 1945, by her husband of 65 years, Earl Sidney Hagans, in 2014; by her son, Sidney Allen Hagans in 2023; and by four siblings.
Her surviving family includes her daughter Delores Morton Eicher (Keith) of Cornelius, daughter-in-law Judith Carter Hagans of Hickory, grandson Michael L. Wolfe, Jr. (Ashley) of Cornelius, NC, and step-grandchildren Patricia Jean Krause of Fort Mill, SC, and TJ Carter of Hickory. She was called Meme by her great-grandchildren (Madison, Caroline, and Jackson Wolfe; Justin, Lisa, Nicole and Johanna Krause, and Jaden Carter). She is also survived by her sister, Faye Hatley of Albemarle and numerous nieces and nephews.
A long-time resident of Albemarle where she was the owner of Hazel’s Salon of Beauty for 56 years, she moved to Leland, NC in 2007 to be near her daughter. Again, following her daughter, she moved to the Charlotte area in 2013.
Mrs. Hagans graduated from Millingport High School, Salisbury College of Cosmetology and Stanly Community College. An active member of the community, she served as president of the Albemarle Garden Club and of the Business and Professional Women’s group. She was named Stanly County Woman of the Year and received the DTM Award from the Toastmasters. A woman of great faith, she served on many church committees and as the Stanly Baptist Association WMU leader, and for many years taught children and youth Sunday School classes in Albemarle and in Wilmington. Always doing for others, she volunteered in nursing homes, battered women’s shelters, and food banks.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00pm, August 17 at Hartsell Funeral Home in Albemarle, NC. The family will receive friends at 1:00pm prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Fairview Memorial Park at 1425 East Main Street, Albemarle.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Western Carolina Chapter, 4600 Park Rd., STE 250, Charlotte, NC 28209, to Via Health Partners for Hospice Care, 7845 Little Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28226, or to a charity of one’s choice.
