Hazel V. Pullins (McCarty) peacefully went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at her home in
Coffeyville, Kansas.
"Sug', can I make you something to eat or would you like a Pepsi?" A phrase that will forever echo in our hearts. Whether it was a morning trip to Goldie's for donuts or a couple strips of bacon and a pancake, or your favorite pie. If Hazel was around, you were going to be fed-and you were going to feel cared for.
Known to most as Hazel, but to those closest to her, she was Momma, Gma, "Gma Pepsi," or "Tiny Gma"-titles she treasured far more than her given name. She stood just over four feet tall, but her heart was the size of Texas. To us, she was the embodiment of love, selflessness, and quiet strength. She carried a servant's heart and often worried about being a burden, though she never was. Small in stature, yet she leaves behind a space that no one else could ever fill.
She preferred to stay behind the scenes, never seeking the spotlight or asking for attention. Her joy was in taking care of others, and her top priority was always making sure no one around her ever went hungry. And oh, could she cook! For those who knew and loved her, just seeing her was the highlight of any day.
Hazel was no socialite-far from it. While Red might have enjoyed the company of many, Hazel preferred the peacefulness of Copan or Hulah Lake, casting a line from the boat or a quiet farm pond, patiently waiting for Crappie. Next to time with her family, those were her happiest moments. And it didn't matter if you were related by blood or name-if you stepped into her home, you were treated like family. Most importantly, you knew you were loved.
As a lifelong homemaker, Hazel was the glue that held her family together. In her later years, her greatest joy came from time spent with her grandbabies, spanning multiple generations. As she liked to say with a grin, "They're not spoiled, they just smell that way!" And spoiled they were. We wouldn't have had it any other way-though it did often require a sugar detox on the ride home or the slip of a four-letter word with that infamous Tiny Gma "tone" usually followed by a sheepish "Whoops," and a shoulder shrug from her.
Hazel was born on October 10, 1932, in Moline, Kansas, to Thomas and LaVada McCarty, as one of six children. The family moved to Coffeyville when Hazel was young, where she grew up living a simple, meaningful life. She married Ted Graham in Coffeyville and was blessed with a son, Eddie. After they divorced, she later married Harold "Red" Pullins on December 6, 1955. The early years of their marriage were spent in Arizona and California as they built their family. Eventually, they returned to Coffeyville, where Red ran a successful construction company and Hazel lovingly cared for the home and their children.
Hazel is survived by her son Harold "Pepper"Jr. (Tami) Pullins of Ponca City, OK; daughter Debi (Rowel) Goodwin of South Coffeyville, OK; daughter Becky Dill of Prescott, AZ. Stepdaughter Janette Egermeier of
Coffeyville, KS. Hazel leaves behind 10 grandchildren and many more great-grandchildren who will all carry her memory in their hearts.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and LaVada McCarty; her five siblings; her husband, Harold "Red" Pullins; two sons, Eddie and Tommy Pullins; her granddaughter Mona Miller; great-granddaughter Wren Goodwin; and great-grandson Jackson Miller.
Funeral Services for Hazel will be held at 1pm on Wednesday May 14th, 2025, at Dearing Christian Church. Graveside to follow at Robbin's Cemetery, Dearing, KS.
