Hazel Anne Purdue passed away peacefully on December 7, 2025, at the age of 92. Hazel is survived by her children Holly; Janica and her husband Jordan; Michelle; and Tom and his wife Kari. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Holly's children Jacob Boyce, Sarah Wilson, Rachel Nipper, and Solomon Boyce; Janica's child Jackie Winn; Michelle's children Kaylee and Becky Barnes; and Tom's children Mac, Miles, and Sawyer Purdue. Hazel is further survived by her treasured great-grandchildren: Kenyon, Braxtin, Brielle, Bo, Elizabeth, Lila, Andrew, Luke, Willow, Maximus, and Scarlet. She is preceded in death by her parents Alberta and Deloss Williams, her sisters Lavora, Doris, and Katherine, her husband Thomas Purdue, sons-in-laws Dan Koford and Bill Parsons, granddaughter Allegra Winn, and grandson William Newel Boyce.
She married her sweetheart, Tom Purdue, in 1954 and together they built a life rooted in faith, music, education, service, and family. Hazel carried that devotion forward for 24 years after Tom's passing in 2001. Although she was full of life, humor, and activity after his death, she also longed to be reunited with him. Although Tom and Hazel briefly lived in Pocatello, Redmond, Ogden, and Washington Terrace, they called
Brigham City, Utah their home for over four decades.
Hazel lived a life of purpose, talent, and generosity. A gifted educator with a Master's Degree, she taught elementary children for 40 years, shaping the minds and hearts of hundreds of children. Many former students still speak of her with warmth, gratitude, and admiration. Her influence became a foundation for countless young lives. She belonged to the professional education organizations N.E.A., U.E.A., B.E.E.A., and most importantly, served as a Utah chapter president for Alpha Delta Kappa.
Hazel loved capturing nature with watercolor painting. She was also a skilled musician with a gift for piano and organ. She played the organ for church services starting at the young age of 12 years old. This extended into her later life as she played for family nights, sacrament meetings, and community gatherings for her local LDS branch at the Fairfield Village retirement community. Her other hobbies included travel, whitewater rafting, cooking, gardening, reading, collecting (stamps, coins, and music boxes), and handwork (knitting, crochet, needlepoint, embroidery, and general crafting).
Hazel's bright spirit, keen mind, and artistic soul blessed all those who met her. What endeared Hazel to so many was her fun sense of humor and playful nature. She loved a good joke and delighted in making people laugh. She lived with remarkable mental sharpness throughout her life. Her photographic memory allowed her to recall scriptures, stories, and details with impressive clarity. Her faith in her Heavenly Father and in Jesus Christ was a defining part of who she was. She cherished the gospel deeply and found strength, joy, and peace in her beliefs.
Though Hazel lived to an amazing 92 years and 10 months, she often joked that she planned to reach 110. Her family feels immense gratitude that she is now free from pain and reunited with loved ones who passed before her.
