Hazel Louise (Thomas) Romine, aged 85, was surrounded by her loving family as she peacefully returned to her Heavenly Father on April 1, 2025 at 3pm in her home.
Born on May 31, 1939, in Joplin, Missouri, Hazel was the cherished daughter of Charles Cleatus Thomas and Laura Mae Williams. From humble beginnings, she grew into a woman of remarkable strength, creativity, and devotion, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Hazel was a proud and devoted mother to four beautiful children: Lorna Marie (Stirewalt) Morrison, Michelle Lyn Swarens, Lewis Jackson Swarens III, and Anthony Thomas (Swager) Romine Sr. Her life was a testament to the love she held for her family, the center of her universe, which extended across 5 generations, with 56 direct descendants.
She married three times before finding her lifelong partner in Milton Elias Romine Jr. with whom she shared nearly 50 years of unwavering loyalty, mutual support, and deep affection. Milton made her feel safe and cherished. As a traditional "kept woman," she embraced her role with grace, finding joy in the security and love her husband provided.
A talented artist and hairdresser, Hazel earned her cosmetology license and spent many years styling hair at her own salon and others, bringing beauty to the lives of her clients. Yet her true artistry shone through in her personal creations. Rarely seen without a paintbrush or crochet hook in hand, she poured her heart into her work, crafting blankets for every loved one, painting their portraits, and immortalizing their most treasured memories on canvas. Her gifts were expressions of love, handmade with care and given from the soul.
Hazel's world was filled with beauty. She adored lighthouses, porcelain dolls, clown figurines, birds, and flowers, and her home reflected her vibrant spirit with stained glass lamps casting colorful glows. Always elegant, she always drove a Cadillac, wore perfume that lingered sweetly and adorned her fingers with twinkling jeweled rings.
A storyteller at heart, Hazel loved sharing tales of her childhood that the whole family knew well, but only she could do justice. Her home was a monument to those memories which she captured as paintings.
Hazel is survived by her husband Milton Romine Jr., three of her four children-Lorna Morrison, Anthony Romine Sr., and Jack Swarens. Her sister Dixie Pieper and brother Howard Thomas.
