Hazel Marie Schlagheck, nee Sweet, departed this life peacefully on the morning of March 26, 2023.
A long-time resident of Milford, Ohio, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 49 years, Raymond W. Schlagheck, and is survived by her loving children Donna Schlagheck, David Schlagheck (Darlene) Debra Snider (Donald) and Diane Echternacht (Jerry). Her Grandchildren Allyson Schlagheck; Zachary Berry; Devon, Donald and Dana Snider; and Ryan (Grace Ooi), Katrina (Eric Rolfes) and Kara Echternacht, and her Great Grandson Dylan Snider, will miss the fun and loving sweetness and kindness that she bestowed on them.
Hazel was born in Eubank, Kentucky, where she graduated high school and then moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. She joined her sister Ruby Singleton (Smith), brothers Ed Sweet (Marie) and Claude Sweet (Billie) and they built lives and families. Brothers Albert, Ross and Clyde had remained in Kentucky. She worked at Westinghouse and later met her future spouse, Ray. Hazel joined him in a long career at Cincinnati Gas and Electric Company, retiring in 1992 to enjoy her leisure and her grandchildren. She loved jazzercise and butter pecan ice cream, a perfect balance that kept her fit. She enjoyed many adventures and trips, including Hawai'i, the national parks of the southwest USA, a European tour, and a Caribbean cruise that made many happy memories for the little girl who had been born at home during the hardest times of the Great Depression.
Hazel was a member of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Milford for 62 years, volunteering her time for Vacation Bible School, altar guild, and projects to landscape and beautify the sanctuary, and she gave years of volunteer service to the Once Around thrift shop. On her 90th birthday, her 60th anniversary in the congregation was noted-during COVID-- with cupcakes and facemasks outside the front door of St. Mark's. At church, and elsewhere she was known as "sweet Hazel" by many who were unaware she was born Hazel Sweet. All who knew her and loved her are grateful for the kindness she unfailingly showed to all persons, as well as her sense of humor and wit. As her nieces Judy Singleton, Claudette Albrecht, Brenda Dyer, Dana Henkle, and nephews Jeff Singleton and John Sweet, who may recall she liked to say, "see you 'morrow." We look forward to that day.
A celebration will be held for Hazel on Thursday, March 30, 2023 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church - 5849 Buckwheat Road, Milford, OH 45150. Visitation will be held from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM. Service will begin at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery. Memorial Donations or flowers may be sent to St. Mark's. In her memory, be kind and offer a cheerful smile to a stranger today!
