Hazel June Schlichting, 102, of Hayfield, MN passed away on Monday, January 12, 2026, at Field Crest Care Center in Hayfield, MN.
Hazel was born on June 25, 1923, in Waltham, MN to William and Selma (Wollenburg) Garbisch. She went to Waltham school and moved to Brownsdale, MN where she attended district #39 school in Brownsdale, MN. She graduated from Austin High School in Austin, MN. Following her schooling, she began to teach at several rural schools for five years. One of the schools she taught for was a one room school house on the corner of their road in rural Waltham.
Hazel married Wilmer Schlichting on June 16, 1946, at St. Michaels Lutheran Church in Waltham, MN. She enjoyed traveling, quilting, reading, and tending to her vegetable and flower gardens. She was a member of Brownsdale Study Club, Brownsdale Senior Citizens, and an extensions club called Hustling Homemakers. She was an active leader in the Waltham Winners and 4-H club. She was a devoted member of St. Michaels Lutheran Church, where she attended bible study and taught Sunday School for 28 years. She also played as the church organist for 22 years.
Hazel is survived by her children, Robert (Cynthia) Schlichting, Richard (Patrick Orton) Schlichting, Joan Schlichting, and Dale (Jane) Schlichting; grandchildren, Tess (Jon) Lucas, Nicole Schlicthing, and Alex (Brandi) Schlichting; great-grandchildren, Ella, Leah, and Aspen Hazel; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wilmer Schlichting; brother, Gilbert Garbisch; sisters, Frances Schlichting and Anona Koehler; daughter-in-law, Liz; and an infant son.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 7, 2026, at St. Michaels Lutheran Church, 30450 570th Ave in Waltham, MN, with Minister Randy Mickelson officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to her service at the church. Interment will be in St. Michaels Lutheran Church Cemetery in Waltham, MN.
