Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sammons Funeral Home on Jan. 7, 2026.
Mrs. Hazel G. Smith Thompson, age 84, beloved wife of Billy Thompson of Adrian passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, January 6, 2026 at Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin.
A native and lifelong resident of the Scott Community, she was the youngest of three children born to the late Jim Smith and Velma Toler Smith. Being raised on a farm, at an early age she became accustomed to work; whether it was in the cotton field, tobacco field or any of the many other chores needing to be done. She attended the Scott School, and while there she caught the eye of Billy Thompson, whom would become her husband in 1959. Mrs. Thompson had worked at various textile and garment factories in the community before working as a Parapro at the Adrian School. She later accepted employment with the Laurens County School System, working in the cafeteria at East Laurens Primary School for twenty years until retiring in 2003. While there she became famous for her rolls and pimento cheese. While working other full time jobs she helped her husband at the family store in Scott; Billy's Superette and Grocery. While the store was open, the U. S. Post Office closed their then present location and moved into the Superette, making Mrs. Thompson the unofficial Post Mistress.
She enjoyed yardwork, tending her flowers and cutting grass.
Mrs. Thompson was quiet, genuine and possessed a godly spirit of concern for others. She and her husband have been lifelong members at the Mt. Olive Church of the Nazarene in Wrightsville.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a brother, Carlos Smith and a son in law, Reverend Brent Danielson.
Mrs. Thompson leaves behind, her husband of sixty seven years, Billy Thompson, their children, Patricia Danielson, Dublin, GA, Matthew Bill Thompson,
Adrian, GA, her only surviving sibling, Mildred Knight, two grandchildren, Jennifer Lambdin, Rebekah Danielson, four great grandchildren, Emma Danielson, Weston Malott, Owen Pucel, Ayden Beaudry and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Friday, January 9, 2026 at Mt. Olive Church of the Nazarene in Wrightsville with Pastor Jimmy Wright officiating.
Mrs. Thompson will be laid to rest in the Mt. Olive Church Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be: Tyler Stone, Kenny Wilcher, Chris Knight, Jim Smith, Russ Cherry and Dee Wilkerson.
Her family will receive friends on Friday, at the church, from 1:30 pm until the hour of service.
