Hazel Thompson Obituary

Published by Ames Funeral Home, Inc. on Oct. 31, 2020.
Hazel Lorraine Gaskins Thompson was born in Centreville, Virginia on February 10, 1950 and departed this life peacefully on October 31, 2020 at home surrounded by her family. Hazel was one of nine children born to the late Harvey L. and Amy Gaskins. She was preceded in death by her brothers Phillip and Harvey W.; and sister Adora Payne. Hazel will forever be remembered by her devoted brother Calvin (Delores) of Front Royal, Virginia; loving sisters Mattie Jones (Sidney) of Manassas, Virginia; Esther Lucas of Centreville, Virginia, Mary Schenck (Alfred) of Centreville, Virginia and Candace Davis of Alexandria, Virginia. Hazel is also survived by her former spouse, Roosevelt Thompson II and their beloved children, Alisa Thompson-Ford (Steven) of Centreville, Virginia; Annette Wright (Benjamin) of Fredericksburg, Virginia and Roosevelt Thompson III of Fairfax, Virginia; treasured granddaughters Lashana and Linette; goddaughter Aliyah Ewell; three very special people DeAndre Joe, Sarah Boucher, and David Nash. Hazel also loved her grand puppies Kobie, Billie and Jordyn; great-grand puppy Leilani. A host of countless other friends and family will cherish her memory. Hazel grew up in Centreville, Virginia and attended Fairfax County Public Schools. She remained a resident of Fairfax County throughout her life. She was a member of the Beautification Club and Advisory Board of Mott Community Center, formerly known as Braddock Community Center. Hazel worked from an early age providing domestic and counseling services to those seeking her employ. She loved listening to music, especially her rhythm and blues oldies. An avid baseball fan, Hazel looked forward to the World Series each year. Like her father, she was a diehard Redskins fan. Hazel kept her mind sharp by doing crossword and sudoku puzzles daily. Hazel enjoyed her Saturday outings with her daughters and granddaughters. She looked forward to cooking delicious weekly dinners and Sunday breakfast for her son. Ever graceful, Hazel was a friend, mom and grandma to all. She touched the lives of many people. She cultivated friendships with her neighbors that were genuine and lasting. We will deeply miss her beautiful smile, loving laughter, and most of all, the love she had for her family and friends. Ames Funeral Home will be practicing federal mandated safety measures to maintain a safe environment for all attendees. Dear Family of our beloved Hazel. I am sad to know she's no longer shedding her light among her family and friends, but grateful she was able to live out her days among you as you loved her to her true Father. Hazel was our family's mainstay helper, during our busiest family years in Falls Church/McLean we came and went with kids, jobs and activities. Hazel never missed her day to be her smiling, industrious self in our home that always needed and was blessed by her cheer and TLC. We only parted company when we retired and moved to South Carolina. Even then, she remembered our family for special occasions and the sadness of losing our mutual friend and work share partner, Susan Lannon. Our memories of Hazel will never fade. May the promised Peace of Jesus be with each of you who will gather to mourn and celebrate her life.
