Hector Harima Obituary
Hector Harima, age 78, of Jacksonville, Florida passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2022. Hector was born November 27, 1943. Hector Harima was born in Lunahuana, Peru on November 27, 1943. He was the first born of Hisaji and Joanne Kosaka Harima. In 1960, at the age of 17, he came to the United States to attend Florida College in Temple Terrace, Florida. While there he studied biology and honed his English skills by listening to country music.
After graduating from Florida College, he attended The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa to complete his Masters and PhD studies in Zoology. While there he met the love of his life, V'Elna Garner and they were married in June, 1973. They moved to Jacksonville in August where he accepted a teaching position at Florida State College at Jacksonville. There he taught Biology and Anatomy and Physiology. During his 35 years of teaching he gave many hopeful students a solid foundation in life science before they pursued careers as nurses and doctors. All this he did with great humor, scholarly dedication to excellence, love for teaching, and genuine concern for each individual in his classes. He retired in 2008.
Hector was a life long enthusiast of art, music, and the great outdoors. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and especially spending time with good friends and family. Hector loved laughing, sharing a good story, or helping others solve a problem. He was a man of generosity and great kindness and he will be greatly missed by all his extended family.
Hector is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, V'Elna Harima, his 2 sisters, Martha Yonamine (Mike), Ivonne Harima, his brother, Oscar Harima, nephew Rodney Yonamine (Joanne) and niece Amy Chan (Jason) as well as 3 great nephews and 1 great niece. He was preceded in death by his parents Hisaji and Joanne Harima and his sister, Beatrice Harima.
His family wants to extend a special thanks to all of his caregivers, especially those from Visiting Angels and Silver Link.
A gathering of friends and family for Hector will be held Tuesday, July 26, 2022 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Hardage-Giddens Chapel Hills Funeral Home, 850 St Johns Bluff Road North, Jacksonville, FL 32225.

My father was president of Florida College when Hector and his brother Oscar attended there. I was just a kid, but I remember hanging out on campus and that Hector and Oscar knew no strangers, even us kids. They were funny, kind, and attentive. Thanks for the memories, Hector (and Oscar).

I was on the FCCJ/FSCJ faculty with Hector. He always had a smile and a great sense of humor. He was a good man. Left a positive legacy. And he will be missed.

As one of Hector's colleagues at Florida State College, Jacksonville, I grew to appreciate his unique sense of humor and his dedication to students. He and I also used cooperative learning techniques in our classrooms, a boon for students. I appreciated his friendship and know he will be missed.
