Hector Mateo Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Puerta Del Cielo Funeral Home on Jan. 27, 2026.
With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of Hector L. Mateo, a charismatic and generous soul, who departed from us on January 17, 2026. Born in the vibrant town of Cayey, Puerto Rico on July 23, 1945, Hector brought joy, life, and adventure to all who knew him.

Hector was an adventurous spirit, always ready to explore new territories and experiences. His courage was that of a roaring lion. His life was a testament to the words of Mark Twain: "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

Hector was a man of the earth, dedicating his life to working in agriculture. His generosity extended beyond his personal relationships, into his work at the Imperial Nursery in Granby, CT, where he retired in 2008 after decades of dedicated service. He had a unique ability to understand and connect with nature, which was evident in his passion for his work. Hector's charismatic personality was truly infectious, his laughter resonating like a melody, and his spirit uplifting those around him.

In his retirement, Hector indulged in his love for collecting miniature cars, engrossing himself in music, and watching movies. His courageous spirit was reflected in his taste for action-packed films, and his adventurous soul was mirrored in his extensive and unique miniature car collection. But what mattered most to Hector, more than his hobbies or work, was his family. He was a devoted husband to Virginia Mateo and a loving father to his daughters, Virginia and Lucy Mateo and his son Hector Jr.. Hector's memory will continue to live on in their hearts.

Hector was preceded in death by his parents, Pedro and Aurora Mateo. A viewing will be held for Hector at the Puerta Del Cielo Funeral Home, located at 730 State Street, Springfield, Massachusetts, on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at 9:00am MST. The interment will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery of Springfield Inc., located at 426 Bay Street, Springfield, Massachusetts, at 11:30am EST.

We invite all who knew Hector to celebrate his adventurous and courageous life. Leave your cherished memories and upload photos of Hector to the memorial page, and help us remember the charismatic and generous man he was. May his soul find eternal peace and his spirit continue to inspire us.
