With great sadness we announce the passing of Helen Chargo, of Minnetonka, on Sunday, July 6, 2025. Helen was preceded in death by her loving husband, Harvey Chargo; and her parents, Joseph and Lilian Bender. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she will be missed forever by her son, Mitchel Chargo (Sue); daughter, Melissa Siegel (Paul); and her grandchildren, Elan, Abby, Jackie, Jason, Ari, Jonah, and Vanessa, and great-granddaughter Liora. Helen also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, and so many dear friends. Helen grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and came to St. Paul for a temporary teaching position. After meeting her husband, Harvey, on blind date, she instantly fell in love, married him and never left the Twin Cities. It became a love story that lasted over fifty years. She went on to have a brilliant career in advocacy which culminated in her position as Executive Director of Sojourner Project, a domestic violence and non-profit shelter which provides emergency shelter, support, and legal advocacy services to those victimized by domestic and sexual violence. She will be remembered by those who knew her as a fierce advocate for the rights of others, particularly for those who could not advocate for themselves, and as a devoted and passionate friend who brought out the best in people. But Helen's greatest joys in life were her husband, Harvey, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. To her, there was nothing more important than her family and she instilled the values of a close-knit family to all who knew her.
