Helen Clock (nee Cornell)
Helen Clock passed away on Sunday, January 19. She was 82.
Born on March 29, 1942, Helen was raised in Portland, Oregon, by a single mother who worked while attending nursing school. At a young age, Helen assumed the responsibility of looking after her younger siblings, Sharon, Larry, and Danny. Her dedication and sacrifices were a gift her brothers and sister still cherish today.
Helen married Bill Smith in 1962 and had two daughters, Cecily and Cydney. Bill's work led the young family to move from city to city across the country, ultimately settling in North Olmsted, Ohio. She was heavily involved in her girls' activities, serving as Brownie leader, lunchroom/playground lady, and PTA mom. When her children grew older, she pursued a career in banking-beginning as a teller and working her way up to the corporate office in Cleveland. She later helped her second husband, Chuck, at his electrical-contracting company, where her smile and nurturing manner led the entire staff to affectionately call her Mommy. That was the beginning of a trend that lasted the rest of her life. To know Mommy was to love and feel loved by her.
Helen adored her grandsons, Brandon and Jaret. "Her boys" were truly the lights of her life. She was their most enthusiastic fan at every game, school program, scout function every life milestone. This love grew exponentially with the birth of her one-and-only great-grandchild, Ellie. True BFFs, the pair loved hanging out, reading stories, going for walks, and playing. Helen's love for her grand- and great-grandchildren knew no bounds. Even as Alzheimer's set in, she ALWAYS responded to visits from her babies.
Creative in virtually every facet of her life, Helen's gift manifested in many ways. She had an uncanny knack for interior design. And her landscape designs were legendary. With Cydney, Helen created breathtaking fused glass pieces, selling their works at art shows across the region. Helen enjoyed the creative outlet-but treasured the time bonding with her daughter more than anything.
Helen was a shining example of leading with love. Her unwavering kindness, thoughtfulness, and generosity showed in everything she did and left an indelible mark on the hearts of those fortunate enough to know her.
