Helen Glazener Obituary

Helen Lizette Glazener passed away two weeks shy of her 99th birthday. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law; Charles and Micou, Christopher and Ann, and her daughter Gretchen and son-in-law Kirk Avery, as well as seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Born in International Falls, Minnesota, Helen worked for two years after high school graduation in a local drug store to put herself through nursing school. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in nursing and began work at Minneapolis General Hospital, where she met her late husband of 70 years, Edwin L. Glazener. They were stationed in Wiesbaden, West Germany during the Berlin Airlift, and then returned to Cleveland, Ohio for his medical residency. They moved to San Diego in 1952.

Helen was active in MAKUA, the Women's Auxiliaries of the San Diego Medical Society and the San Diego Symphony, MADCAPS, and the San Diego Junior and Senior Assembly. She also enjoyed many years of volunteering for the St. Paul's Episcopal Church Thrift Shop, the Thrift Shop of the Boys' and Girls' Aide Society, and for her own church's White Elephant Sale.

Helen loved being in the sun at the beach with her family and all of the neighborhood kids, and played tennis and golf in her younger years. She was an avid bridge player. She loved her faith and the Episcopal church, and was deeply committed to her family.

The life of Helen Lizette Glazener will be celebrated at a Choral Evensong at St. James by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, 743 Prospect Street, La Jolla, on November 6, 2022 at 5:00PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. James by-the-Sea Episcopal Church Landscape or Organ Fund.

Glazener family, I am so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. I would see your parents from time to time at Christmas parties over the years, and it was always great to talk to them and catch up a little on your families. They were dear friends of my parents, and I have fond memories of visiting, medical meetings at retreats, etc. My condolences. And she had a great first name too!
