BETHLEHEM - Helen Docous Markopoulos, 90, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2023, after a brief hospitalization.
Helen was born on February 21, 1933, in Albany to the late Nicholas Thomas and Marianthi Rokas Docous, both Greek immigrants, who came to the U.S. in the early 1900s. After graduating from Albany High School in 1951, she worked for a number of years as an accounting clerk for the N.Y.S. Department of Public Works. In August 1965, she met William Constantine Markopoulos, who had been visiting the U.S. from Greece; for both, it was love at first sight, and they married a few months later. After the birth of their children, she left the workforce to become a full-time homemaker and later worked as an administrative assistant at St. Sophia Apartments, until retiring in 1996. Helen was a faithful member of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Albany, where she was a former member of the choir and a longtime member of the Daughters of Penelope (past president) and Ladies Philoptochos Society. She was endlessly patient, thoughtful and kind, believed the best in everyone, and made friends wherever she went.
She was the beloved mother of Constantine Markopoulos of Carrboro, N.C., and Marianthi (William Doyle) Markopoulos of Hingham, Mass.; and the cherished grandmother of Damian. She is also survived by her dear sister, Irene (Peter) Mafilios of Glenmont, and many treasured nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends. She was predeceased by William, her husband of 49 years; and her brothers, Thomas and Constantine Docous.
A visitation will be held on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Burial will take place in Graceland Cemetery, Albany.
