She attended Augustana University where she graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1956 with a degree in speech pathology. Helen was deeply committed to helping children and worked in her field until the birth of her three children: Erik, Gregg, and Nancy.
In 1956, Helen married the love of her life, Duane Nystrom. Together, they shared 66 wonderful years of marriage, filled with love and dedication, until Duane's passing on August 5, 2022.
Helen was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother whose love and care for her family was unwavering. Her life was enriched by many passions. She loved playing tennis, baking, and entertaining friends. A dedicated member of St. Martin's Lutheran Church, she actively participated in various groups and cherished her faith and community.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Duane, and her son, Erik. She is survived by her children, Nancy (Perry) Cole and Gregg Nystrom (Karry Fuller); her grandchildren, Price(Brooke) Cole, Samuel Cole, David Cole, Nickolas (Bashonda) Nystrom, and Beverly (Michael), Nystrom Ruiz and her great-grandson, Oliver Ryan Nystrom.
Helen's warmth, kindness, and zest for life will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A celebration of Helen's life will be held at 11 am, December 20, 2024 at Saint Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 606 W. 15th Street, Austin, TX 78701. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Martin's Lutheran Church in memory of Helen.
