Helen Sauer Obituary
Helen was born in Mt. Sterling, IL, in May 1924, the daughter of Clara and Andrew Ashbaker, and was preceded in death by her six siblings. Leaving home at an early age, she moved to Chicago, where she worked as a waitress and met her future husband, Don. Married for 27 years, they raised five children-Steven, Christine, Clifford, Jay, and Sue. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Helen and Don climbed the ranks in Chicago's restaurant scene, working at renowned spots like Crossroads and the Homestead. Later, their journey took them to Saratoga Springs, NY, where they were Dunkin' Donuts franchise owners. Helen's warmth and attention to detail made her a beloved presence behind the counter, fostering friendships over many a donut and cup of coffee.
After moving to Wimberley, Helen continued her passion for hospitality, working at David Lewis' local establishments and forming countless friendships within the community. She was an active member of St Mary parish alongside her daughter, Christine. Helen was known for her generosity, often baking cookies and treats, with her rum cake being a holiday favorite among family and friends. Her legacy of kindness, grace, and love for her community will be cherished by all who knew her.
Over the past two years, Helen was shown great care and compassion by the dedicated staff at Deer Creek Nursing. Helen was much loved by the staff and residents, due to her quick wit and famous wave. Our family extends our heartfelt gratitude to everyone at Deer Creek.
A memorial service will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church on Saturday, December 14th, at 10 a.m., with a reception following in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wimberley Library, or a charity of your choice.
