Helen Henderson Settle, 95, of New Haven, passed away on May 10, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of faith, dedication, and service. She was the widow of James William Settle.
Born to the late Jesse and Alice Henderson on June 27, 1928, in Reidsville, NC, Helen's journey was marked by unwavering commitment and a profound love for her church.
Helen and James William Settle married on January 29, 1949. They moved to Connecticut not long thereafter and found what was thought to be their home church at Immanuel Baptist. Shortly after they were invited to a storefront church on Admiral Street called Beulah Heights First Pentecostal Church where they were filled with the Holy Ghost and baptized in Jesus name.
Helen and James both sang in the choir until James' passing. Eventually she rejoined the choir which had many names including the Sanctuary choir and the State Missionary choir. For many years she served on the local Usher Board and was a member of the state Usher Board where she served as vice president.
Helen also was a bus driver for the Sunday School department, which she loved doing. She helped in the Kitchen for events when needed, especially her famous church punch. Whatever Helen could put her hands to do to help, she did it. Whatever you needed, she had it in her pocketbook. There was no job too big or small for her to do.
In her professional life, prior to retiring, Mrs. Settle was employed at Yale University, where she contributed her talents to the History Art's Department for many years.
Helen will be remembered for her faith, warmth and kindness. She would give the shirt off her back to help someone.
Mrs. Settle's memory will be cherished by her son, Bobby Settle; daughter in love, Michelle (Mitchell) Daniels; four grandchildren, Kyle Settle, Whitney Settle, Myles Settle and Taylor Settle; four great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends as well as a great friend and care giver Helen Perry.
She was predeceased by a brother, David Henderson; and sisters, Beatrice Henderson, Hallie Henderson and Irene Henderson
A funeral service to honor and celebrate Helen's life and legacy will be held Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Beulah Heights First Pentecostal Church, 782 Orchard St., New Haven. A viewing will be held at the church from 9:00-10:00 a.m. The burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
