Mrs. Helen Proctor Simmons, age 89, beloved wife of William "Bill" Lee Simmons of Soperton passed away on Sunday evening, November 23, 2025 at Dublin Square Assisted Living in Dublin, GA.
Born in Treutlen County, she was one of nine children born to the late Lewis Proctor and Elsie Roberta Cammack Proctor. She grew up in Treutlen County where she attended Soperton High School. She had worked in the Textile Industry at Soperton Manufacturing and Oxford Industries for approximately thirty-five years. In 1979 she married Omega, Georgia native, Bill Simmons and they made their home in the Garden City / Rincon area. They remained in the Savannah area until returning to Soperton in 2023.
In retirement, they enjoyed traveling and had visited locations to include Canada, Alaska, the Bahamas, Nova Scotia and many favorite areas throughout the United States. The lifestyle of coastal Georgia suited her as it allowed her to pursue her love of fishing, crabbing and shrimping. She was always ready to teach others the skill of throwing and retrieving a cast net and then anxiously picking through the catch. Her thin layer chocolate cakes were one of her many coveted dishes that she created in "MeMaw's Kitchen".
She and Bill had been longtime members at the First Baptist Church of Garden City and after returning to Soperton, they attended Soperton First Baptist Church where she enjoyed the fellowship of the Joyce Dennard Sunday School Class.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her former husband, Alvin Sidney Meeler, two daughters, Patricia A. Meeler and Donna Denise Meeler Lorenz; a son, Gregory Wade Simmons and sisters, Christine Proctor, Jeanette Proctor Meeler and Mildred Proctor Morrison.
