Helen Rose Hudson Sykes, 91, of Fayetteville, NC, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Monday, September 15, 2025.

Born on March 19, 1934, in Sampson County, NC, Helen was the daughter of the late Estol Blaney Hudson and Pauline Estelle Pope. She was also lovingly raised by her stepfather, the late Rev.W.E. Pope.

A devoted Christian, Helen faithfully served her church and community throughout her life. A member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church since 1955, Helen was active in numerous ministries, including the Women's Missionary Union (WMU), Vacation Bible School, and various other church organizations.

Helen had a generous spirit and a deep love for her family and friends. She was always willing to lend a helping hand and was known for her hospitality, especially her home-cooked meals. She cherished time spent with loved ones and especially looked forward to the annual family beach trips to Topsail Island.

She was a proud member and treasurer of the 71st Ruritan National Club of Fayetteville for many years, and she greatly enjoyed the fellowship of her close-knit group of friends, affectionately known as the "Dirty Dozen." Whether taking road trips with friends and cousins, hosting gatherings, or playing cards, Helen lived life with joy and intention.

Above all, Helen will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. In addition to her role as a homemaker and together with her husband John, they built a successful family business, Sykes Realty and Construction, in Fayetteville.

In addition to her parents and stepfather, Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, John Andrew Sykes; her son-in-law, Dennis Rickman; her brothers, J.B. Hudson, Bill Pope, and Glenn Pope; and her granddaughter, Tiffany Sykes.

She is survived by her four children: Judy Rickman, John Sykes Jr. (Danna), Tammy Zucco (Rick), and David Sykes (Keli); 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, and many special extended family members.

Helen and her family were blessed by two special caregivers, Karen McNew and Janet Ridgen who were her companions during the last years and minutes of her life.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 22, 2025, at 1:30 PM at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. The family will receive friends prior to the service, beginning at 12:00 PM. Burial will follow at Cumberland Memorial Gardens.

Flowers are welcome; however, memorial contributions may be made in Helen's memory to Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, P.O. Box 25515, Fayetteville, NC 28314.
