Helene Donley Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by DeFiore Funeral & Cremation Service on Dec. 22, 2025.
Helene Donley of Union, IL passed suddenly on December 16th, 2025. She was born Helene Eales in a farm house in Hebron, Wisconsin on December 28, 1934 to Clayton and Katherine (Gleiter) Eales. At the beginning of World War II, her family moved to LaGrange, Illinois, where her parents worked at a war defense plant. Helene attended LaGrange Township High School. On May 19, 1951 she married Lawrence Donley of Berwyn, Illinois. Working hard at 2 jobs, she and Larry purchased their first home within 3 years. In 1958 they purchased a Pure Oil service station in Berwyn that they owned for the next 22 years. In 1962 Helene went back to school to learn emerging computer technology and worked at various companies including North American Rockwell and Polaroid. In 1974 the Donley family opened the Seven Acres Museum near Union, Illinois, where their extensive antiques collection was displayed. Seven Acres would evolve into Donley's Wild West Town and became one of the largest privately owned tourist attractions in the State of Illinois. Helene served as President of L.C. Donley & Sons Amusement Enterprises, Inc. until her retirement in 2019. Her family states, "Helene was not President in name only. She ran all aspects of the operation. She WAS the company. Without her, the Wild West Town would never have achieved the growth and success that it did." Helene spent her final years relaxing, watching game shows, and working on her computer. On December 16th she had just returned from having her driver's license renewed. She told her husband Larry that she wasn't feeling well and was going to lie down when she suffered a fatal heart attack. Helene should be remembered as a loving mother and devoted spouse, a woman of great strength and determination with an unbelievable work ethic. She is survived by her husband of 74 years Larry, sons Michael (Kelley) Donley, Randall (Susan) Donley, and 3 grandchildren: Shawnah, Scott, and Shawn (Megan) Donley. Helene was preceded in death by her parents Clayton and Katherine, her sister Shirley, and daughter-in-law Christine. A private family burial is planned. Interment will be at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Cemetery in Palatine, IL. You are invited to share a memory of Helene online at: defiorefuneral.com

I was lucky enough to have many memories of Helene and the Wild West Town, first as a young father bringing my own two kids on a regular basis to enjoy the Wild Wild West Town adventures; then, decades later, in my retirement job as a part time Wild West Town attractions manager, mountain man, sheriff, pony wrangler, train driver, and Scout and school field trip coordinator; then as a proud grandpa, watching my excited, wild eyed granddaughter dash from one Wild West Town attraction to the next.
The Wild West Town was a fun place, but much more than that. It was a place that over the years, gave kids, literally hundreds of thousands of them from all over the world, a chance to see and live out scenes from the Wild West-our greatest American shared mythology. But to succeed, it had to run as a business. The unbelievably creative imaginations of Larry, Randy and Mike constantly gushed forth with new ideas. But Helene was the cool, level-headed one, keeping an eagle eye on on margins, inventory, costs, and employee hours.
But Helene was much more than a devoted wife, mother and business manager. She was a mentor as well. Many a young area resident experienced the Wild West Town under her guidance as his or her first job. The Wild West Town was a teamwork academy which gave young, first time employees an opportunity to have paid experience in retail sales and inventory , time management, customer relations, theatrical production and performance , and mechanical maintenance-and a chance to discover themselves in the process. That Wild West Town teamwork allowed it to thrive for almost 50 years. And working at the Wild West Town gave retirees such as myself the best reason of all to get out of the door in the morning and keep working-to make others happy. I am grateful to have enjoyed a 35 year career as an attorney and employer of paralegals and secretaries. But I cherish the memories of meeting and working for Helene, Larry, Randy and Mike and the privilege of enjoying their friendship.
My beat up old cowboy boots, heels worn down from walking the Wild West Town grounds for 10 hour days, are still in my closet, ready to hit the trail... just in case Helene calls.

Our deepest sympathy for Larry, Randy, Mike and the rest of the family. Helene was the heart and soul of Donleys Wild West Town. She was almost always calm, even on the craziest of days. She was a problem solver. She was a caring person who led with both a keen sense of business and her heart. She loved her family.

We have so many wonderful memories and feel fortunate to have spent so many summers working at the museum with all of you. We learned so much ( like there is always something to do besides sitting still ) and are forever grateful.

May God hold you all in the palm of his hand as you celebrate Helene.

Love Sara & Mark Foster
