Helmut de Haas

Helmut "Hank" de Haas, 91, of Newington, a beloved father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2026, with his family by his side.

Hank immigrated to America from Bremen, Germany as a young man in the mid-fifties. Shortly after, the love of his life and future wife, Giesela, also emigrated from Germany. They made their home in Newington, CT, where they raised three children and created countless cherished memories together. Hank was a German-trained butcher where he learned all aspects of his trade including meat quality, curing, sausage production, and hygiene. He was a highly skilled diligent worker earning respect from co-workers and management.

Hank leaves behind his sister, Monica Burchard (Bremen, Germany); son, Roger de Haas; daughter Ruth de Haas; and son, Michael de Haas and his wife Paula (Chiaputti). He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren; John de Haas and his wife Kelly, Nicholas de Haas and his wife Alycia, Nicole Colomb and her husband Kyle, Dylan de Haas and his girlfriend Chelsie Halloran, Ryan de Haas and his wife Miranda Garrett, MD; great-grandchildren Carter de Haas; Chase de Haas; Kennedy de Haas; and Mason Colomb. In addition, he is survived by his nieces Rika Winters and Heike Falk and her husband Keith. Hank was predeceased by his wife Giesela de Haas, and his daughter-in-law Sally de Haas. The family extends its sincere gratitude and heartfelt thanks to the staff of Bel-Air Manor for the love and compassion they showed to Hank.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Hank's family on Friday evening, February 20, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington. There will be a short service at 6:30 p.m. for family and friends wishing to attend. Helmut will be laid to rest in a private ceremony alongside Giesela at a later date.
