Henry Bowens Obituary
He was born to the late Mr. Algie Bowen, Sr. and Mrs. Priscilla King Bowen of Rushmere, Virginia. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 25 years, Mrs. Elizabeth Pearson Bowens; his son, Mr. Tyrone Bowens; and his siblings, Mrs. Virgie Smith, Mr. Algie Bowen, Jr., Mrs. Helen B. Slade, Mrs. LeClara Bowen, Mr. Matthew Bowen, Sr., Mr. Pilson Bowen, and Mr. Alton Fenwick Bowen.
He was a 1950 graduate of Isle of Wight County Training School. He also attended Norfolk State University, where he played football. He was employed as an "able body" mechant seaman for over 30 years. He was a member of the National Maritime Union of America. He loved to keep busy working on projects and fixing things. He loved to go fishing and love his job that allowed him to travel around the world to other countries. He loved entertaining and being around people. Henry lived a good life.
He is survived by one daughter, Sheila P. Bowens; one granddaughter, Larheesha S. Robinson (Richard); one grandson, Kimmie A. Debraux, Jr., all of Newport News, Virginia; seven great-grandchildren, Akira E. Bowens, Akill D. Williams, Asia S. Murrell, all of Newport News, Virginia, Somjai Murrell, Jr of Norfolk, Virginia, China N. Williams of Middletown, Pennsylvania, Jacquiell K. Bowens of Hampton, Virginia, Steven Lindbergh Bowens of Newport News, Virginia; one sister, Verlene Deloris Thomas of Surry, Virginia; and one brother, Elester M. Bowen (Deborah) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by a wealth of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and step-children.
Viewing will be held from 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Friday, July 29, 2022 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel. A Celebration of Life service will be held 12:00 Noon Saturday, July 30, 2022 at First Gravel Hill Baptist Church in Smithfield, VA. Interment will follow in First Gravel Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
