It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Henry J. Hayes, who departed this life while under the care of physicians at St Francis Medical Center, Midlothian, VA.

Henry was born on February 11, 1940 in Amelia, VA to the late Henry Clay Hayes and the late Estelle (Morgan) Hayes. A devoted husband, father, brother, uncle and friend, Henry lived a life marked by integrity, kindness, and unwavering faith.

He graduated from Russell Grove High School. Henry worked for Levi Strauss, where he was respected by colleagues for his dedication.

Henry was baptized at an early age and was a proud member of Branches Runn Baptist Church, where he served as a dedicated member. He had a deep love for fishing, working outdoors, and spending time with his family.

He is preceded in death by his devoted wife Dorothy Mae Hayes, children Carolyn (Hayes) Smith & Evelyn Hayes, sister Catherine (Hayes) Williams, brother Lee Douglas Hayes Sr. and sister-in-law Lois (Morgan) Hayes and nephew Lee Douglas Hayes Jr. He leaves to cherish his memory: his beloved sisters, Emma (Hayes) Williams & Deaconess Hester Robertson of Amelia, VA, his nephews, James White Jr., Thomas Williams, Alfus Hayes, nieces Joyce (White) Louis, Edith Hayes & Kandy Hayes; 2 sister in laws, 2 brothers in laws and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, church members, and dear friends.

A celebration of Henry's life will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Branches Runn Baptist Church, with Pastor Alonza B. Williams officiating. The viewing will take place on Friday, July 18, from 12:00–7:00 p.m. at Hawkes Funeral Home.

Though he is no longer with us in body, his legacy of love, strength, faith and his infectious laugh, will live on in all who knew him.
