After an exceptional life, Henry Marston Hearne died peacefully after a brief illness on Sunday January 8, 2023. Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside memorial service at Forest Park Cemetery on Thursday, January 12, at 3:00 p.m. with St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral clergy officiating.
In 1939, Henry was born to Katherine Marston Hearne and Horace Hearne, of Shreveport, Louisiana. His childhood was filled with vast forests in which to roam, a large doting family and the kind of freedom and love that all children need, but few are lucky enough to receive. Some of his fondest memories are from Ninock Plantation, which remained dear to him throughout his life.
After attending elementary school at Southfield School, Henry attended Kent Boarding School in Connecticut. Here he learned that he could survive on his own wits and temerity. When the school provided no entertainment for the students, Henry built his own shortwave radio out of odds and ends, much to the consternation of the administration. Later, in order to play polo, he transferred to New Mexico Military Institute, which fomented in him a great love of the American West. After graduating from Stephen F. Austin University and the death of his beloved cousin Randolph Flippin Marston, Sr., he began his life's work of managing his family's agricultural properties in North Louisiana. Upon Henry's death, his vast experience and knowledge of both agriculture and the oil and gas industries were unparalleled.
Henry's life and adventures were shared with his devoted wife of 58 years, Sara Louise Patterson Hearne. Together they generously supported wildlife conservation efforts and never stopped exploring the untamed areas of the globe. Henry helped found the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin in North Louisiana and frequently traveled to the Château du Clos de Vougeot in Burgundy for annual celebrations. People of Henry's character are rare these days and he will be missed by many.
His family would like to thank those who helped with his care, including Dr. Sanders Hearne, the kind staff at the Glen, Jeff Crane, Gaye Lesner, Tom McKissick and so many more. Also many thanks to his dear friend, John Baxter Atkins III, who never left his side. In lieu of floral contributions, please make donations to St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, Centenary College, Delta Waterfowl, or Quail Forever.
