Henry Kohn Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Kelley & Spalding Funeral Home & Crematory on Jan. 22, 2026.
Henry was 89 at his death. He was born in Chicago, Illinois to Henry and Kate Kohn. He is survived by his wife, Carol Louise "Cookie" Anspach Kohn of 64 plus years, his two sons; Henry Louis Kohn III, daughter-in-law Anne Elizabeth Smiley and Lawrence Edgar Kohn, daughter-in-law Denise Kohn-Staehli, four wonderful grandchildren: Henry, Jillian, Isabelle, Liam, his brother Richard, sister-in-law Lynne Kohn and his nephews/niece; Peter Anspach, Abby Kohn, Sam Kohn. He was preceded in death by his infant son Thomas William.

Henry grew up in Chicago's south side Kenwood neighborhood and graduated from Harvard University. Henry started working for Fansteel in their research lab, developing new metals. While at Fansteel Henry attended Northwestern University earning a Masters in metallurgical engineering. Immediately following their marriage they moved to Fort Lee, VA when his US Army Reserve unit was called to active duty. After his service they moved back to Highland Park and Henry subsequently received an MBA from the University of Chicago. He worked in a number of companies/fields using his engineering and business acumen.

While already an avid traveller, Henry and Cookie embarked on a career in travel spanning 44 years, retiring in the summer of 2024. They were seen working together or on trips that took in many hotel, cruise and tour visits to research where and how their clients could best see the world.

Henry will be remembered by many as a facilitator for those around him. While rarely providing direct advice, his thoughts and actions were an inspiration and support to everyone in his orbit. Henry was a true intellectual who loved classical music, reading and sharing stories that spanned the globe. Over the year's Henry was a chairman of the Chicago Heart Association, a treasurer of the Highland Park Public Library, and a president and treasurer of the Highland Park Rotary Club.

A funeral will be held at 1:00pm on Sunday, January 25, 2026 at Makom Solel Lakeside in Highland Park, IL. The family will be available after the service at the temple for those who wish to provide their condolences. The family will also be available to greet friends at Larry's house (Evanston, IL) from 2:00pm - 5:00pm on Saturday, January 24, 2026.
