Henry Calhoun Maxey, beloved daddy, papa, brother, uncle, and friend died peacefully and surrounded by his family on Tuesday, April 22nd, 2025.

Henry was the oldest of three children and was born on Tuesday, July 15th, 1941 at his family’s home in Eastville, Georgia. Being raised by a farming family, he learned at an early age about the importance of his faith and the value of hard work. He graduated from Oconee County High School in 1959 and then began work at Anaconda Wire and Cable in Watkinsville before entering the construction business in 1962. In 1970 Henry and his brother Harry formed Maxey Brothers, Inc. and went on to become one of the most successful grading and pipe contracting companies in the northeast Georgia area until their retirement after almost 50 years in business.

Since 1983 Henry had served on the Board of Elders at Nations Church (formerly Living Faith Fellowship) where he oversaw many church facility and land improvements. He also served on the Board of Directors at Oconee State Bank for 21 years. Even though Henry was soft spoken, he never missed an opportunity to share his deep faith and to encourage his family, friends, employees, business partners, and Men’s Sunday School class. He was a firm believer in ‘leaving people better than he found them’ by equipping them to put God first, believe in themselves, work hard, choose to do what’s right, and make wise decisions.

In 1963 Henry married Gloria Herndon Maxey. They were married for 47 years up until her death in 2011. Together they raised three children on the same family farm where Henry was born and raised. His children still reside on Maxey Farms and cherish a lifetime of sweet memories.

In addition to his wife Gloria, Henry was predeceased by his parents, Clarence Wood Maxey and Mary Elizabeth Parrish Maxey, and by his great granddaughter, Millie Anne Garrett. He is survived by his three children: Beth Maxey Dillard, Mike (Tammy) Maxey, and Keith (Angie) Maxey. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Julianne (Simon) Garrett, Josh (Brittney) Dillard, Josh (Heather) Garrett, Alana (Jimmy) Lipham, Michael Garrett, Jami (David) Wood, Preston Maxey, and Melissa Maxey. His great grandchildren are Betsy Grace, Amos, and Leila Mae Garrett, and Harper and Henry Dillard. His siblings are Harry (Wanda) Maxey and Lynn (Jim) Langford. Additionally, he is survived by nieces, nephews, a multitude of cousins, and many lifetime friends.

A celebration of life service will be held on Thursday, April 24th, at 11:00 am at Nations Church (8780 Macon Highway, Athens) with Pastor Mike Holt officiating. Visitation with the family will be held at the church immediately following the service. A private burial will be held at later time. His seven grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Henry battled bravely with Parkinson’s disease for many years and never lost his gentle demeanor or easy smile, even though the disease destroyed his body and his mind. The family wishes to thank the staff at Highland Hills Memory Care for their excellent and compassionate care since August of 2024, as well as Agape Hospice Care for their tender attentiveness to him in his final days. In lieu of flowers, donations in Henry’s memory may be made to St. Mary’s Highland Hills Village or Nations Church.
