Henry "Skip" Nickels Jr., age 90, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026. He lived a long and meaningful life defined by devotion to God and his family, honorable service to his country, and kindness toward everyone he met.
A proud father of five and a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Kristina Nickels, Skip shared 45 years of marriage with the love of his life. Together, they built a life rooted in love, commitment, and faith. Skip found his greatest joy in time spent with those he loved most, always guided by gratitude and a deep trust in God. He was the steady presence at the center of family gatherings-offering wisdom, laughter, and a listening ear. His children remember him as hardworking, kind, and endlessly supportive - a man who taught by example the values of integrity, perseverance, and love.
Throughout his life, Skip was known for his generous heart and gentle spirit. Whether through his career, friendships, volunteer work, or well-timed jokes, he made a lasting impact on everyone he met. He gave freely of his time in service to others, never seeking recognition, and lived his faith through quiet acts of compassion. He also had a lifelong love of animals, especially dogs, finding comfort and joy in their companionship-a reflection of his patient, loyal, and caring nature. He enjoyed reading, golfing, and watching sports, and found deep contentment in these simple pleasures.
Skip proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, a commitment he held with quiet pride and deep respect, carrying the values of discipline, responsibility, and service with him throughout his life.
Above all, Skip will be remembered for the love he gave so freely-to his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and friends. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched. He was deeply loved and faithfully cared for by his wife, Kris, who became his devoted caregiver after a life-altering fall eight years ago that left him disabled. With unwavering strength, patience, and love beyond measure, she ensured he was surrounded by dignity, comfort, and tenderness each day. Their bond during those years was a profound reflection of the vows they shared and the love that sustained them both.
Now free from pain and suffering, Skip rests peacefully in God's eternal care. His family finds comfort in knowing he is at peace, reunited with loved ones, and-true to form-joyfully playing golf once again.
He is survived by his wife, Kris; his five children, Joseph Nickels (Geri), Steven Nickels, Michelle Alderman (Scott), John Nickels (Angela), and Monika Nickels (Miguel Escalante); eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many loved ones who will cherish his memory always.
A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 3016 Providence Road, Charlotte. Family visitation will begin at 10:00am, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00am. A graveside burial service will follow at Forest Lawn East Cemetery, 3700 Forest Lawn Drive, Matthews.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a
