Henry Butler Roberts' adventure ended on October 12, 2025. He was born on May 20, 1935, in Duluth, the only child of Arthur and Katherine (Matter) Roberts.
He was a gentleman who walked through life with quiet strength and genuine care for others. Henry had a gift for connecting with people on a personal level, listening deeply, speaking kindly, and making others feel valued. His steady presence and thoughtful guidance impacted countless people around the world. Preserving Hartley Park and Hawk Ridge were among his proudest accomplishments—though he'd always say he played just a small part.
Adventurous by nature, Henry found joy in exploring the world’s lesser-traveled corners. He loved capturing these adventures through the lens of his camera. The beauty of everyday life in unfamiliar places fed his curiosity and deepened his appreciation for the world and its people.
He is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary (McGiffert) Roberts; his sons, Hugh (Ingrid) and Scott (Olivia); his grandchildren, Nick, Anna, Frances, and Maximo; and numerous international students who became family.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 7th at 1:00 p.m. with a visitation beginning at 12noon in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1710 E Superior St, Duluth, MN 55812. Memorials to Hawk Ridge, Hartley Nature Center, or donor's choice are preferred.
