Henry Sengstaken

Henry Sengstaken, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and passionate outdoorsman, left this world peacefully at home in Butler, NJ, on December 8, 2024, at the age of 94. He was born on November 10th, 1930, in Flogeln, Germany. Henry's incredible journey began with his departure from Germany in June 1958, a pivotal moment that led him to meet his true love, Hella, at Platzel, a German American Dance Hall in NYC. Their love blossomed into a beautiful marriage that lasted 65 devoted years. He became a US citizen in February 1964.

Henry's career as a sheet metal mechanic for JR Green in Boonton showcased his dedication and skill, earning him the respect of his colleagues and friends. A man who loved life and embraced the great outdoors, Henry thrived in nature. 

He was an enthusiastic member of several organizations, including the Sierra Club, the NY NJ Trail Conference, the Appalachian Mountain Club, the KCCNY, the Hackensack Canoe Club, and the Mohawk Canoe Club in Flemington, NJ. His love for the outdoors was matched only by his passions for gardening and cycling, where he found joy and contentment in every moment spent surrounded by nature.Family life brought Henry immense happiness. He cherished his role as a husband to Hella, always ready for the next adventure with his beloved partner, often encouraging her with his cheerful phrase, "Let’s go now." His warmth and spirit were also a source of encouragement for his children: son Erik (Jennifer) and daughter Ingrid Brinster (Craig), and he took great pride in his grandchildren—Casey, Quinn, and Gregory.

Henry's personality shone through in the joy he found in life and the zest with which he approached each new experience. Memories abound, such as his spirited exclamation, "let it rip!" while skiing, capturing both his enthusiasm and his love for adventure.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Hella, his children, grandchildren, and his sisters, Christine Koslowski and Hilde Bitter, who will forever hold onto the cherished memories and profound lessons he imparted during his remarkable life.

Henry is preceded in death by his parents, Christian Sengstaken and Anna (nee Droge), and his brother Christel Sengstaken. Though he is gone, the legacy of his love, adventure, and devotion to family will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who knew him. Henry Sengstaken will be missed beyond measure, and his spirit will live on in the lives he touched.
