Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sharpe Funeral Home, Inc. on Nov. 19, 2025.
Henry Timmons Jr. was born on September 7, 1935, in Roxboro, North Carolina, the only child of Henry Timmons Sr. and Emma Springfield Timmons. Following the passing of his mother, he
was lovingly raised by his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Velero Springfield. At the age of six, Henry's family relocated to
Burlington, North Carolina. He attended JordanSellars Senior High School, where he proudly played on the football team. He also enjoyed playing baseball with the Vey Laundry Team. On October 19, 1954, Henry began his service in the United States Army, which lasted until October 18, 1962. Henry dedicated 54 years of his life working at Carolina Hosiery Mill, where he faithfully walked through the doors each day, rarely missing a single one. His strong work ethic and passion for his craft made retirement a challenge-he had to try twice before finally stepping away. In retirement, he found joy in simple pleasures: taking occasional rides up Apple Street, watching Jerry Springer, Cheaters, and his cherished western movies.
A man of deep faith, Henry found a second home at St. Matthews AME Church. He was a true advocate for those who couldn't speak for themselves and served faithfully as a member of the Sons of Allen and President of the Usher Board until his health declined. He was deeply honored to be recognized as Man of the Year at St. Matthews AME. He instilled a strong foundation of faith in his children, personally walking them to Sunday School each week. He poured his wisdom, love and encouragement into every child that passed through the doors of St Matthews AME Church. It was his mission to make sure everyone had peppermint candy when entering the church.
While he was hanging out with a childhood friend, he spotted Gloria Jean Pinnix. He was so captivated by her presence, he knew she was meant to be his girlfriend. A perfect gentleman, he borrowed a bicycle to graciously escort her home. They shared a beautiful marriage that lasted 70 years, until Gloria's passing in 2006. On August 29, 2025, Henry peacefully departed this life at the age of 89.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion through his children: Antonio (Vivian), Darrell (Lisa), Barry (Angela), Donza, Brian (Eva), Amy Timmons, and Michael Graves. Three siblings, Ernest, Ron, and Athena Timmons, all of Roxboro, NC, eleven grandchildren, great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. One aunt, Marion Degraffenreidt of Baltimore, MD. He shared a bond so close with his uncle, Otis Springfield. They affectionately considered each other as brothers. The two shared countless hours together, filled with laughter, memories, and their favorite show, Heat of the Night.
He was preceded in death his parents, Henry Timmons Sr. and Emma Timmons, and his beloved wife, Gloria Jean Pinnix Timmons.Henry's life was a testament to faith, family, and enduring love. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
