Henry Tummons was born on July 31, 1940, in Greene County, Missouri, to Fred and Dona Tummons. Growing up on a farm, he learned the value of hard work early in life-a lesson that became the foundation of his character. The eldest of three, Henry shared his childhood with his sister, Reva, and younger brother, Gene, as they embraced the joys and challenges of rural life.
After graduating from Morrisville High School, Henry pursued a business degree from Missouri State University. It was during this time that he met and married the love of his life, Julieann. They were married in November of 1959. Together, they built a life filled with love, raising two children, Melinda and Jeffery.
In the early 1970s, Henry moved his family to St. Louis, where he became the head of the fraud investigation team for State Farm Insurance. His work led to close collaboration with local law enforcement and the FBI, and he played a pivotal role in dismantling the largest car theft ring in St. Louis at the time. This achievement was a testament to his integrity, dedication, and unwavering commitment. After 15 years in St. Louis, the family returned to Springfield, Missouri, in 1988, where Henry would spend the remainder of his life, surrounded by family and friends.
Henry retired from State Farm in 2002 after a distinguished career, yet his passions outside of work continued to define him. He was an avid reader and watcher of westerns, especially tales of mountain men and the frontier, which spoke to his adventurous spirit. He was a devoted outdoors man and hunter. Henry also enjoyed working in his vegetable garden, sharing its harvest with those he cared for.
Beneath Henry's sometimes gruff exterior lay a heart full of kindness, humor and generosity. He was a steadfast provider and protector of his family, offering strength, guidance, and unwavering support through life's ups and downs. His resilience shone through after the passing of his beloved Julieann in 2021, a loss he bore with quiet strength.
A faithful member of High Street Baptist Church, Henry found comfort in his faith and community. He is survived by his sister, Reva, his children, Melinda and Jeffery, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren as well as many others who were touched by his warmth, wisdom, and steady presence.
Henry's life was marked by dedication, love, and an enduring spirit of adventure. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Graveside services will be Friday, October 4, 2024 at 10:30 AM in Rose Hill Cemetery, Willard under the care of Gorman Scharpf Funeral Home. Visitation will be Thursday, October 3, 3024 from 5-7 PM in the funeral home.
