Herbert Clarence Thurn, 98, died on October 7, after a short illness, surrounded by loving family. A Celebration of life will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 106 Osage, Bismarck. Visitation will be held one hour prior.
Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Herb was born on February 7, 1927 in Venturia, ND to parents, Fred W. Thurn and Rosina Kemmet. He married Mildred Doctor on March 31, 1951 and they enjoyed 66 years of marriage.
Herb graduated from Wishek High School, Ellendale Teachers College and received a master’s degree in counseling and guidance from North Dakota State University. Right out of high school Herb taught at a Wishek area one room school house from 1944 to 1950. During that time, he was with the Wishek National Guard 188th Field Artillery Battalion. Herb went to work for North Dakota Job Service in 1961 and retired on December 31, 1988.
Herb enjoyed travel, wood carving, genealogy research and social activities with the Germans from Russia society.
Herb is survived by three children, Clark (Claudia) Thurn, Cheryl (Duane) Rockvoy, and Clarice (Troy) Lancaster; five grandchildren, Courtney (Tyler) Ross, Chelsey (Ashton) Gronewald, Cassie Bethke, Mitchell (Claire) Lancaster, Taylor Lancaster and seven great grandchildren.
