Herbert Bergmann Obituary

Herbert Bergmann, a passionate follower of Jesus Christ, a loving father and generous Opa passed away peacefully on November 18th, 2025 at 89 years old. He was born on January 29th 1936 in Dortmund Germany. He married Edith Klappert Jan 24th, 1958 in the Salt Lake City Temple. They were married 67 years. Edith preceded him in death seven weeks before on September 29th, 2025.

Herbert was born to an affectionate and hard-working family in the industrial city of Dortmund, Germany where his father worked in the Steel Mill. When WWII began, living near a steel mill became dangerous as it was often the target of bombing. The bombing became so intense that around the age of 7 Herbert was sent to a small farm in the Black Forest to live with strangers. He slept in the hay loft with other children but they were not nice to him. He wrote his mom that he was alone, sad and scared. Within a few days his mom showed up, told the farmer’s wife off for not being kind to her son and took him home. During this time, they moved from Dortmund to Lebenstedt where Herbert’s father was working in a new steel mill.

Herbert’s mother raised her boys in the church. Though their tiny branch grew slowly, Herbert and his family were the heart of the branch. As a young adult, the mission president asked Herbert to not leave for a mission but stay and become a leader in their local branch. He was called as 1st counselor in the Branch Presidency. Herbert became extremely close to the missionaries serving in the branch. They took him to Switzerland to take out his endowments and remained lifelong friends.

As a young teenager Herbert completed an apprenticeship for Instrument Repair in the Steel Mill and continued to work there until he emigrated in 1957.

After he and Edith married in Salt Lake in 1958, they moved to Provo where Herbert, despite his struggles with English, was able to convince the head engineer at Geneva Steel that he had the training and experience for the position.

They bought a home on the west side of Provo, when tragedy fell. Geneva went on strike for 3 months, and Herbert began working for Whitaker Heating and Air Cond. Herbert, was injured when a piece of metal flew into his eye. He was Hospitalized for weeks lying still on his back while his eye healed. He wasn’t able to work for months and Herbert and Edith talked often of moving back to Germany. Luckily Geneva hired him back and they lived in their little Red Brick home in Provo for 15 years.

Herbert believed that trials could be blessings, and this was just another example. Herbert eventually began his own business, Bergmann Heating and Air Conditioning while working for Geneva. He worked both full-time jobs until Geneva shut down in 2001.

Herbert was generous to everyone. He fixed countless furnaces and coolers for free. He hired many who needed a second chance in life. He hired and trained his children, nephews, grandsons, and granddaughters while they went to college. Herbert’s purpose in life was always family. Herbert’s son, Darren worked side by side with him for over 30 years, still carrying on Herbert’s legacy today. Herbert fully retired at age 83 to take care of his wife Edith.

Herbert and Edith built their dream home on the Provo bench area in 1975, and though they loved to travel, their favorite place was always their own backyard. Family BBQ’s around the pool, with more steak and food than we could eat. They worked tirelessly creating an oasis and sitting outside, talking with friends and family with a Diet Pepsi was pure joy for Herb. Last minute weekend trips were common for the family, southern Utah, California, or any of the National Parks in the west. Lake Powell was one of the family’s favorites.

Herbert, Edith and children traveled often to Germany to visit family. Herbert loved living in Utah, but was always homesick. Herbert’s love for family and his generosity was fueled by his love of the gospel and the Savior. He was not shy with his testimony, never discouraged questions, and was always willing to talk about the gospel and politics. Herbert was greatly admired because he loved without boundaries and cared deeply for others.

A special thank you to Ashley, Herbert’s favorite daughter-in law, Bristol Hospice and Gustavo Barragan for their loving care of Herb in his last years.

Herbert is survived by his 4 children, Darren (Ashley) Bergmann, Heidi (Mark) Nelson, Margrit (Tim) Stout and Janeen (Brent) Merritt.

His funeral service will be this coming Saturday, November 22nd, 2025, at 1 pm with a viewing before at 11:30, in the Mapleton Legacy Church, 1050 North 300 W, Mapleton, Utah.

Condolences may be expressed to the family on this page.
