Herbert Lee Hayes, 78 of Girard, passed away Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL.
Herb was born November 6, 1946, in Pontiac, MI, a son of Wayne and Sylvia Bunn Dugger. Herbert graduated from Girard High School with the class of 1967.
Herb was a member of the US Army and served in Vietnam. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and Bronze Star Medal. Herb had been a coal miner and was employed by Freeman United Crown II Mine in Virden, IL where he worked as a miner and a roof bolter. He was a member of the UMWA, the Iron Sleds in Nilwood, IL,and the Challenger Car Club back in the 1960's. Herb loved to ride his Harley.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers: Clifford Dugger, Wayne Lee Dugger, and Duane Hayes.
A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
Herbert is survived by his daughter, Corey (Tony) VanAusdall of Virden, IL, two grandchildren, Cade and Jake VanAusdall, brother, George (Donna) Dugger of Girard, IL, sister, Gail (Roger) Johnigk of Battle Grounds, WA, and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to Girard Fire and Rescue.
Davis-Anderson Funeral Homes, Girard is in charge of arrangements.
