Herbert "Herb" Hirschfeld

December 22, 1937 – October 31, 2025

Herb was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1937. In 1939, at just two years old, he and his mother, Fanny, escaped Nazi Germany and immigrated to the United States.

He graduated from the City College of New York (CCNY) in 1960 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and later earned his Professional Engineer (PE) license. Herb began his career in the aerospace industry before establishing himself as a highly respected consulting engineer specializing in submetering technology. He oversaw numerous projects focused on converting buildings to energy-efficient systems and cost-saving technologies. His expertise led to his selection by the U.S. Department of Energy to represent the United States in the International Energy Agency, a consortium of NATO countries that met annually across Europe and the U.S.

A lifelong baseball fan, Herb was devoted to the Brooklyn Dodgers until their move to Los Angeles, at which point he shifted his loyalty to the New York Mets-remaining a passionate supporter throughout his life.

Herb and his late wife were devoted animal lovers, and their home was always filled with pets-many of them rescues.

He is survived by his loving daughter, Stephanie Hirschfeld.

In honor of Herb's memory and his love of animals, donations may be made to Bestfriends.org and scleroderma.org.
