Herbert Lee Groover, 72, of Lexington, North Carolina passed away peacefully after an extended illness on September 16, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 20, 1952 in Atlanta, Georgia and lived the early part of his life in Cumming, Georgia. Herbert built a life defined by hard work, unwavering honesty, and generous loyalty to the ones he loved.
Herbert’s devotion to his family was the cornerstone of his life. He is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Groover; his children, Chad Groover, Shelly Caires, Stacy Hill, and Stephanie Snow; and his sister Diane Gilbert of Cumming, Georgia and has 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Marie Groover.
Over the years, Herbert dedicated himself to his construction business, retiring only when he knew his work was truly done. He was known for his quick wit, friendly nature, and for making friends wherever he went – seldom did he meet a stranger. He was a proud alumnus of his high school baseball and basketball teams, and a passionate fan of football – devoted to Appalachian State and especially his cherished Georgia Bulldogs. Country music and the smell of a good cigar filled Herbert’s home during the holidays and celebrations, and the joy of travel with his wife, children, and the grandchildren created memories cherished by all.
A proud member of Mt. Tabor Methodist Church and in recent years an attendee of Hillsdale Methodist Church, Herbert was ever willing to lend a helping hand to those in need, embodying the spirit of Christian service in the quietest, most heartfelt ways.
Friends and family will gather to honor Herbert’s life on Friday, September 19, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with Pastor Jerry Webb and Pastor Sam Hickerson officiating. Visitation will be held the evening before on September 18th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday.
Herbert will be dearly missed , but the memories and the love he shared will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. As we remember his life, we are comforted by the promise: “The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
