Herbert D. McCarthy, 92, of Methuen, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, February 19, 2026 at Lowell General Hospital, Saints Campus. He was the husband of the late Dorothy (Carr) McCarthy, with whom he had shared over 65 years of marriage before she passed away in 2024.
A son of the late Thomas and H. Ruth McCarthy, he was born on October 1, 1933, in Medford. Herb was raised in Tewksbury and received his education at St. Patrick's Grammar School before graduating from Keith Academy, Class of 1951. He then enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country for a period of 4 years. Herb was a devoted communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church for over 50 years. He also found great enjoyment in being an active member of Longmeadow Golf Club.
Herb worked as a supervisor at Honeywell in Lowell, Billerica, Brighton and Lawrence for over 30 years until his retirement. In his younger days he worked at RCA and was also one of the original employees of the Tewksbury Water Department. Volunteerism was a foundational element of his life, especially in his retirement. Lending his time and energy to his church and St. Vincent De Paul Society for over 20 years, just to name a few.
During his retirement, in addition to his volunteer work, Herb worked as a handyman and painter extraordinaire helping anyone in need including family, friends and various local religious organizations.
A lifelong sports fan, he was an ardent supporter of all our local teams and, in particular, a die hard fan of the Boston Red Sox. In addition to his passion for golf, he played softball for over 20 years and loved to bowl. He also enjoyed traveling, especially on cruises and down to Cape Cod, which always held a special place in his heart.
Herb could engage anyone in conversation effortlessly and from all walks of life. He had a gift for making others feel comfortable and gracefully commanded a room. He had a genuine interest in others and possessed the ability to make others feel interesting and heard. He will be truly missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.
Surviving Herb are his children, Deborah Brown and her husband, Michael of Dracut, Brian McCarthy of Bradenton, FL, Barry McCarthy and his wife, Nancy of Lowell, Caroline McCarthy of Methuen, Stephen McCarthy, and his wife, Tara of Milton, and Mary McCarthy of Richmond, VA.
