Herbert Meyer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors - Clawson on Mar. 15, 2026.
Herbert T. Meyer of Beverly Hills, Michigan, was born on July 30, 1939. He was the cherished only child of Herbert and Regina Meyer of Fair Haven, Michigan.

From an early age, Herbert discovered both a love for and a gift in music. This passion led him to attend the University of Michigan in 1957, where he earned a Master's degree in Music Education. During his time in Ann Arbor, he met the love of his life, Michele, at the Newman Center at St. Mary's Church. They were married on February 3, 1962, beginning a devoted partnership that would span 64 years.

Herbert and Michele made their first home in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where Herbert began his career teaching music at Cranbrook. After several years, they moved to Birmingham where Herbert taught in the Birmingham School District. During that time, they welcomed three children-Anne, Michael, and Libby-who were raised in a home filled with love, encouragement, and support for their individual interests.

Later in his career, Herbert transitioned from music education to elementary education, where he became a beloved teacher known for his kindness, dedication, and genuine care for his students, colleagues, and families. Even after retiring, Herbert continued to substitute teach well into his late seventies, a testament to his lifelong commitment to teaching and service.

Herbert was a man who truly enjoyed life and never stopped learning. He was an active member of the Senior Men's Club of Birmingham, where he valued friendships, social connection, and engaging lectures. A devout Catholic, Herbert attended Mass at Holy Name Church in Birmingham for almost 60 years, where he shared his musical gifts by singing in the choir and playing the flute.

He loved to travel and was fortunate to visit Japan and much of Europe. Just as much, he enjoyed hearing about the travels of others and warmly welcomed people from different countries and faiths with curiosity and respect.

Herbert was a gentle man who had a deep love and care for people and was blessed with many dear friends who loved him in return. His heart was open, accepting, and full of kindness.

Herbert is survived by his loving wife, Michele (nee Boccia); his adoring children, Anne Hoef (Paul), Michael Meyer (Christy), and Libby Meyer (Evan McDonald); and his four treasured grandsons, Joey Meyer, Zach (Ashley) Meyer, Christopher Hoef, and Adam Hoef. He is also survived by his cherished great-grandson Leon Meyer, as well as numerous close friends and family members near and far.

His visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 17th, at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home,1368 N Crooks, Clawson, MI 48017 starting at 4pm. A prayer service will be held at 7pm.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated the following day, Wednesday, March 18th, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Birmingham, Michigan, 630 Harmon, Birmingham, MI 48009, at 10am. Friends may begin visiting at 9:30am.
