Herbert Schrader Obituary

Published by Porter Loring Mortuary McCullough on Feb. 7, 2018.
Herbert M. Schrader, age 84, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 in San Antonio. He was born in Bronx, NY to parents, Jack and Helen Schrader. Herb began his shoe career in Memphis with Wexner Brothers. His career spanned over 30 years, where he ran their organizations in Philadelphia, Atlanta and Chicago. Herb moved back to New York in the 1980s. In 1986, they moved to San Antonio where he leased the shoe department at Julian Gold. In 1996, Herb and his wife opened up Theo and Herb Designer Shoes until his retirement in 2011. He was in the designer shoe business for over 50 years. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, merchandiser, businessman, gentleman and respected by colleagues and friends alike. Stuart Weitzman's kind words reiterates Herb's loyalty and business ethics: "He was the first showman in the Southwest to buy my shoes way before he had his own store. He continued to be a loyal customer all his years in the shoe business. Every young person starting out needs someone to give them that kind of vote of confidence. I have missed him since his retirement; one of the good guys." He was preceded in death by his wife, Theodocia; and brother, Jerry. Herb is survived by his cherished daughter, Marcy Cato; grandsons, Brian and Barry; nieces, Carol Katz (Jeffrey) and Elise Rowin (Linc); and his beloved dog, Lucky. GRAVESIDE SERVICE MONDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2018 1:30 P.M. BETH-EL MEMORIAL PARK 1715 AUSTIN HWY Rabbi Stahl and Rabbi Nathan will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the animal rescue SNIPSA, at snipsa.org.

Sorry to hear of his passing. Herb was a nice, kind man and I always looked forward to him visiting my stamp shop. He will be missed.

Herb was a steady presence in my life. I met Herb, Theo and Coco (their precious poodle) upon their arrival in San Antonio. Mother and I were blessed to know them, first as our neighbors and, with the passing of time, as faithful friends. Herb and Theo were my Guardian Angels when my mother passed away and later on, their hospitality and graciousness welcomed my husband, Carlos, with open arms. Throughout the years, Herb's caring heart, generous spirit and witty sense of humor nurtured our special friendship and made the holiday season always memorable for Carlos, myself and our dogs. My eternal gratitude for his legacy: cherished memories of the heart, treasured gifts and the discovery of the fascinating world of designer's shoes. Because of Herb's expertise and keen knowledge of my personality, the "classic jewels" from my shoe collection continue to strike conversations, some of which have translated into wonderful friendships. God was incredibly good to me when He placed Herb in my life. He will be sorely missed, but never forgotten...Though time might forget...Gratitude and Love will always remember.

Herb had a genuine interest in his customers' lives as well as their having well adorned feet! He made every customer feel like they were his friend. He instilled that gift in Marcy as well. I will cherish memories of Herb.
