Herbert R. Toler, Jr., 97, of Joliet and Des Plaines, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 10, 2025. Born on March 23, 1927, in Chicago, Illinois, Herb lived a life full of love, laughter, and lasting memories.
Herb is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Audrey Toler; his son, Jeffrey Toler (Shawn Wiles Toler); his daughter, Kimberly Martin (Robert Martin); his granddaughter, Chelsea Toler (Tony (Chris) Fronda); and many close friends who became like family over the years.
A proud native of Chicago's South Side, Herb later moved to West Chicago, where he earned the nickname "Lefty" and became a standout athlete in both football and basketball at West Chicago High School. A lifelong Chicago White Sox and Bears fan, he was known for his spirited, and often loud, "coaching" sessions on Sundays from the couch.
Herb proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II, becoming the first in his family to attend and graduate from college. He earned engineering degrees from the University of Illinois and went on to build a successful career with his business, Ceramic powders, Inc., in Joliet, IL.
Herb will be remembered for his unwavering work ethic, deep devotion to his family, and his sharp sense of humor. His spontaneous silliness and joyful presence left an impact on everyone he met.
A Celebration of Life will be held on March 28, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Moretti's in Rosemont, IL (9519 West Higgins Road, Rosemont, IL 60018).
The family welcomes anyone to share memories, stories, or anecdotes of Herb in the G.L. Hills online guestbook.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Herb's name to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675 or https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org/default.aspx?tsid=10043&ovr_acv_id=5246
