Date of Death: October 3, 2025
Date of Birth: March 13, 1944
Herbert William Twiddy went to glory on October 3rd, 2025, at the Coastal Manor facility in Yarmouth, ME, after a long decline.
Herbert was born in Seattle, WA, on March 13th, 1944, to the Reverend William Mclean Twiddy and Louise Eissmann Twiddy. The family soon moved back east. Rev. Twiddy served a number of parishes in central New Jersey. The family enjoyed summers at the family cottages on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee, where Herbert swam, camped, hiked, and water skiied. Herbert attended Metuchen, NJ High School, where he played on the football team. Upon graduating in 1962, he went on to Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 1966. In the August of 1969, Herbert married Eileen King, the beginning of a life together that lasted fifty-six years.
The times were strong with Herbert. On August 28th, 1963, he woke at 3:00 in the morning to take a bus to New York City, and then another bus to Washington D.C., to attend the March On Washington. He was active in the Civil Rights and Antiwar Movements during the Sixties. From this he was led to the ministry
Herbert graduated with a Master of Divinity degree from Bangor Theological Seminary in 1972, and was ordained in the United Methodist Church the same year. He served pastorates in Lisbon/Lisbon Falls, ME, Barryville/Eldred, NY, Stillwater, NJ, Viola/Ladentown/Wesley Chapel, NY, Bloomsbury/West Portal, NJ, and Burke/Constable, NY. Every year Herb took his youth groups canoeing down the Delaware River, and toured the churches of New York City with his confirmation class. His door was always open to parishioners in need.
In 1988, Herb left the ministry and joined Social Services in Malone, NY. He did his utmost for his clients. During the Great Ice Storm of 1998, he worked with the National Guard taking food to outlying homes without power.
In 2007, Herbert and Eileen moved back to Maine, the place they always loved, settling in the town of Yarmouth. They enjoyed going out for coffee and visiting the ocean. In recent years, Herbert's health declined. Eileen always took care of him, and kept him comfortable.
Herbert's life is the witness of an open heart. He believed in the responsibility of society to aid every human being. We will always be grateful for his life, and cherish his memory.
Herbert is survived by his wife Eileen, children David (Rebecca) and Elizabeth, sister Irena Wachs (Dennis), four grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. A memorial service will be held in the summer of 2026 at Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire.
