Bastrop Providence Funeral HomeHerbert Richard Woerndell Jr., age 67, of Bastrop, Texas, passed away on June 14, 2025.
He was born on October 1, 1957, in Seguin, Texas, to Herbert Richard Woerndell and Lovie Lorene Woerndell. After the early passing of his mother, he was lovingly raised by his Uncle John and Aunt Ann Brazeal in Manor, Texas.
Herb joined the United States Navy in 1974, beginning a career of service that would span nearly three decades. He served until 1979, then briefly worked for The University of Texas at Austin, where he met his wife, Paula, in 1981. In 1983, he re-enlisted and continued his military service until retiring as a Senior Chief Petty Officer (Damage Controlman, DCCS) on April 30, 2002, with 26 years of honorable service.
During his Navy career, Herb was recognized for his leadership and dedication with several awards, including the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and multiple unit commendations. He also received honors for his service during the Gulf War, five Good Conduct Awards, and medals for overseas and humanitarian missions.
After retiring from the Navy, Herb returned to UT Austin, where he continued serving the community in a civilian role. He worked as a maintenance supervisor and later became assistant to the Dean of Communications, retiring in December 2020.
Known affectionately to many as Herb, as Dad to his sons, Papa to his grandson, Herbie to his nieces, nephews, and extended family, and Senior Chief or Shipmate to his fellow sailors and coworkers at UT, he was someone people looked up to in every part of his life. He loved motorcycles, watching movies, and spending time with his family. He was proud of his military service and the life he built after it.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Paula Laverne Woerndell; his sons, Matthew Allen Woerndell (Little Matt) and Travis Lee Woerndell; his grandson, Isaac Aaron Woerndell; and his brother, Matthew Allen Woerndell (Big Matt).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Lovie, and his half-brother, Jerry O’Bryant.
Herb was a father figure to many beyond his immediate family. He shared a special bond with his nieces, nephews, close friends, and extended family, all of whom continued to hold him close throughout his life. Friends of Matthew, Travis, and Isaac also came to know him as a steady, supportive, and caring presence. He made a lasting impression through his kindness, loyalty, and sense of humor, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at Nixon Cemetery on October 1, 2025 beginning at 10am.
