Herman Alton Atwood, Jr., age 91, born in Fort Monroe, Virginia entered his eternal home Sunday, July 27, 2025. Herman Atwood grew up in Virginia. He attended Hilton Elementary School and Warrick High School in Newport News Virginia. At Warrick High School he began running track and set several school records. He attended Lynchburg College and was the captain of the cross country and track team where he broke the school record for the mile at 4 minutes and 29 seconds. It is also at Lynchburg where he met the love of his life, Mildred Beech. Herman was stationed in the Army at Fort Knox in Kentucky 1957-1958. He organized a Cub Scout troup in the Atlanta area and was a Cub Master. He enjoyed an incredible 33 years working at Sears Roebuck and Company where he held many positions and made many friends. After retiring from Sears he still had more to offer and worked in the Dekalb County School system 13 years as a job coach to help place students with special needs into job sites. He was a member of First Christian Church of Atlanta for 69 years where he served as youth Sunday School teacher, Deacon, Elder, Elder Emmeritus, sang in the choir, and played handbells. He enjoyed traveling (especially to Walt Disney World as Donald Duck was his favorite character), woodworking, and was an avid Braves fan.
Herman is preceded in death by his parents Herman Alton Atwood, Sr. and Mamie Atwood, his brother John Atwood, and cousin (brother) Eddie Trexler. His survivors include his wife of 69 years Mildred "Bootsie" Beech Atwood, son and daughter-in-law Richard Atwood and Judy, daughter Cindy Atwood, cousin (sister) Catherine McKnight, grandchildren: David Atwood, and Katie Atwood, great grandchildren: Benjamin Atwood; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to University of Lynchburg, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or First Christian Church of Atlanta. The funeral services will be held Thursday, July 31, 2025 at First Christian Church of Atlanta, 4532 Lavista Road, Tucker, GA 30084 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Tom Edmondson officiating. The family will receive guests at the church one hour prior to the service. The committal service will be held at 12:15 p.m. at Crest Lawn Memorial Park.
