Herman L. Hilton Sr., 84, of Gnadenhutten was born on March 23, 1940, in Dover, Ohio, and passed away on February 21, 2025. He was the son of the late Walter J. "Skip" and Minnie L. (Pfeister) Hilton.
He lived a fulfilling life marked by dedication to his work, faith, and an unwavering love for tinkering and electronics.
A talented and well-known welder, Herman retired from Boiler Makers Local #744 in Cleveland, a testament to his skills and commitment to his craft. His work took him on journeys across Ohio, neighboring states, and Florida, allowing him to showcase his expertise.
He attended York School in New Philadelphia, Ohio, and furthered his knowledge at Boys Industrial School in Columbus. His educational background laid the foundation for a successful career, where he became well-respected among his peers and colleagues.
Outside of his professional life, Herman was a man of many interests. He had a natural talent for fixing things, and his love for electronics allowed him to embrace his creativity. Whether repairing a broken appliance. or fixing a gadget. he took great joy in uncovering the mechanics behind everyday items. He was also an avid golfer. His sons and grandsons have followed in his passion.
Herman was also known for his deep faith, a pillar that supported him throughout his life. He was a member of the Strait Gate Baptist Church of Dennison. This profound sense of spirituality guided his actions and interactions, leaving a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to know him.
On March 21, 1960, he married Nancy Ann Metzger, who preceded him in death on January 20, 2014. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Helen L. Chitti, and Susan K. Cox, his still-born brother, Joe Jeff Hilton; his father-in-law, Russell D. Metzger; his mother-in-law, Gretchen W. (Reiss) Brown; along with his sister-in-law, Barbara L. (Metzger) Gray.
He will be sadly missed by his children; Herman Hilton Jr. (fiance, Karen) of Cuyahoga Falls, Rebecca (Mike) Smith of Kimbolton, Robert J. Hilton (fiance, Lorrie) of West Lafayette, and Raymond R. Hilton (fiance, Amy) of North Canton; his beloved grandchildren, Benjamin Smith, Amanda (Nathan) Kinsey, Ashley Hilton, Nicole Hilton, Daniel (Caitlin) Smith; eleven great-grandchildren; his brother, Charles R. (Donna) Hilton; his brother-in-law, Ronald Metzger; his close friend, Harry Monahan, who was like his brother; along with several dear nieces and nephews.
