Herman Morse Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Anderson's Tribute Center - Hood River on Feb. 25, 2026.
Karl (Herman) Morse, age 55, passed away on February 16, 2026. He was born on November 30, 1970, in Cortland, New York. He is survived by his brother, Ken Morse (Peggy), and his sister, Ellen Morse. Karl is preceded in death by his father, Kenneth J. Morse, his mother, Elizabeth (Turghetto) Morse, his brother Eric Morse, his sister Deborah Morse, and his brother John Morse.

Karl lived his life with an unmistakable spirit of adventure. In 1993, he graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial & Labor Relations and Business. Karl was married briefly. Over the years, he worked in a variety of places, including the Hanford Nuclear Site. One of the stories he shared was about caring for his mother in her final years. After her passing, Karl left Cortland, New York and began traveling. He drove until his car ran out of gas, and then simply continued on foot and by hitchhiking, made his way across the United States, down through California, and eventually to Hood River, Oregon. Along the way, he met people who showed him kindness, and he remembered them. Though he stayed at warming shelters at times, Karl never saw himself as "homeless." In his words, he was "on an adventure."

Karl had moments of great brilliance and intelligence. He had a dry sense of humor and a unique way of connecting with people-leaving an impression that stayed with you. People knew Karl's name. He told many stories, including one about being an actor in a movie. His interests were wide and wonderfully specific: he loved sports, especially baseball; he was a "Swiftie"-he loved Taylor Swift songs; he found comfort and focus in jigsaw puzzles; and when asked about his favorite food, he would say he liked sushi. He loved decorating for Christmas and had an eye for beautiful things.

In the final months of his life, Karl became part of Journey House, a recovery home in Hood River, where he lived for over four months. He offered encouragement in ways that mattered. Karl also became involved at Hood River Alliance Church, participating in "Man Coffee", "Celebrate Recovery", and various ministries. He formed meaningful relationships and was genuinely loved by many in this community.

Karl will be remembered for his intelligence, his humor, and the way he showed care even while carrying his own struggles. His life was not simple, but it was deeply human, and it touched more people than he ever realized.

May you rest in peace, Karl. You will be missed.
