Herman "Sandy" Patrican, Jr., of Essex, husband of Diane (Lynch) Patrican passed away early Tuesday morning June 25, 2024, at home with his wife by his side.
Born in Gloucester May 11, 1948, he was the son of the late Herman Patrican Sr. and Martha "Mim" (Rice) Patrican.
Sandy was a graduate of Gloucester High School Class of 1966. Following graduation, he immediately began working the evening shift at General Electric in Lynn building airplane engines. With a wife and son to support he decided one job was not enough. He proceeded to fill his free time with a newspaper route, delivering milk for the Ipswich Dairy and loading freight cars. Weekends he worked at Maria's Pizza, his father's restaurant.
Helping a friend install a car windshield was the beginning of a different path. Several years were then spent working at Beverly Glass Company and learning the trade. Sandy, never one to avoid hard work, decided to become his own boss and in 1969 he and Diane opened a small glass company in Ipswich. Persistence and determination led to a move to Topsfield where they stayed until 1998. Continuing to grow and expand Sandy built a new and larger facility and moved the location to Rowley where it remains today. He loved his job, loved working with his two Sons, and only recently retired after 51 years. Despite his success, Sandy was a simple man, true to himself. Travelling, mountain biking, boating and skiing were activities he loved and enjoyed many times with family and wonderful friends. Ski trips with his children and then with grandchildren were the very best. Sandy had a generous spirit and a big heart. If you needed a hand he was there to help.
He avoided attention and quietly supported many philanthropic organizations. He especially cared for The Northeast Arc, The Open Door Food Pantry and Cape Ann Animal Aid. He leaves behind a wife, children, grandchildren, family and friends who loved and appreciated all he was and did. He will be greatly missed.
In addition to his wife of over 58 years he is survived by his children, Michael Patrican and his wife, Kristin of Boston, Kelly Fraga and her husband William of Essex, Brian Patrican of Boston, grandchildren Morgan Patton and her husband Hunter of Tampa, Florida, Jackson Patrican of Gloucester, Griffin Patrican of San Diego, California, Kevin Fraga of Methuen, Brian Fraga of Medford, Kaitlin Fraga of Essex, Maxwell and Avery Patrican of Boston, brother Stephen Patrican of Gloucester, sister-in-law Kathy Anderson of Gloucester, sister-in-law Nancy Eddy and husband Steve of Middleton, sister-in-law Susan Viccaro and husband Michael of Rowley, sister-in-law Courtney Peckham and husband Walter of Gloucester as well as many nieces and nephews. Sandy was predeceased by brothers, Marc and Scott and sister, Patricia.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John The Baptist Church, 52 Main Street, Essex on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at 11 AM. All are welcome to attend. Arrangements by the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester. For online condolences please visit www.greelyfuneralhome.com

I'm so very sad for your loss, Diane. You and Sandy were a true love story from when I first knew you in high school. We all hoped to have a love like he had for you. God bless you and all who loved him.
