Obituary for
Hershel Miller
After years of valiantly struggling with Diabetes and other health issues, Hershel Leon Miller born on January 21, 1931, peacefully set sail from this life on a journey to Heaven to be with his Lord and Savior on January 30, 2023. Hershel was a loyal and devoted husband, a loving father to his children and grandchildren, and a faithful friend to many. His belief and trust in the Lord gave him the strength to endure many tribulations while enjoying happy and peaceful life.
Hershel grew up on a farm in the community of Algoa, Arkansas with his six brothers and three sisters. Because of his life on the farm, Hershel greatly appreciated the outdoors and loved to trotline fish and duck hunt on the Cache River. He married Gladys Maxine Mann in Algoa, Arkansas in 1952 and celebrated their 70th anniversary in June of this past year. At the age of 20, he put away the plow and left home to join the Air Force. During his 22-year career, Hershel served in the foreign countries of Korea, Taiwan, and Turkey, as well as other stations across the U.S. He also was a photographer in the Air Force. Hershel served in the USAF Security Services with distinction and was both a Korean and Vietnam War veteran. After retiring as a Senior Master Sargent from the Air Force in 1973 Hershel moved his family back to Amagon and Newport, Arkansas while pursuing a successful heating and air conditioning career. Over the next forty years, Hershel worked for and serviced many customers in and around the Newport area. He was known for his honesty and integrity in his work and dedication to doing the best job he could. As a result, Hershel had not only a lot of satisfied customers but many friends and acquaintances.
Hershel was a dedicated member of the Central Missionary Baptist Church in Newport where he served as a deacon and was a good member in standing. He fulfilled many roles in the church throughout the years and was one of the charter members when the new sanctuary was built in 1997 on the current property located at 3000 Melody Lane. He was a member of the Richwood Volunteer Fire Department.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Danial Miller and Melissa (Lashlee) Miller; one son, David Keith Miller; four brothers, Aubrey Miller, Norman Miller, Truman Miller, and Danny Miller; three sisters, Eldora Shelly, Charlene Mann, and Betty Carlew.
Hershel is survived by his wife, Gladys Maxine Miller of Newport; one son, Hershel Dale Miller and wife, Yalonda, of California; one daughter, Kathy Renee Smith and husband, Ralph, of Newport; five grandchildren, Andrea Camden and husband, Jason, of Monticello, Heather Smith of Newport, Noah Smith of Newport, Sarah Miller of California, and Aidan Miller of California; one great-grandchild, Carson Camden of Monticello; two brothers, G D Miller of Missouri, and Billy Miller of Tennessee.
Friends may visit at the Jackson's Funeral Home, Monday 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Jackson's Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Balch-Johnston Cemetery.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers will be Bob Wayne Mann, Ronnie Mann, Roger Mann, Dennis Mann, Cody Mann, and Tyler Mann.
