He had been declining in health; however, his passing was unexpected. He was born on October 13, 1950, in Philippi WV., a son of the late Lewis Newton Ward, and Margaret Jean (Robinson) Ward. Hillbilly found great joy in the simple pleasures of life, embracing his role as a devoted husband to the former Bonnie Sue Payne, on August 10, 1990, who survives at their home. He leaves behind three sons; Jeremy Eugene Ward, Thomas Kenneth Payne, and Jeffrey Alan Payne; one daughter, Angela (Ward) Mueller; a brother, Jesse Ward of Philippi, WV, nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by one daughter; Amy (Ward) Orndorf, sister; Rebecca Lynne (Ward) Walker and husband, Bill, sister-in-law, Sherry Rae (England) Ward, K-9 companions whom he considered as his babies; Stubby, Dixie, and Jack. Mr. Ward attended the schools of Barbour County and graduated from Philip Barbour High School. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Army where he received numerous medals of honor, and he was considered an expert on the M16 Riffle during Vietnam Era. Hillbilly worked in the coal mines, he drove water trucks, and log trucks to help support his family. He loved riding Harley's, hunting, fishing, fast Cameros and as a matter of fact he and Bonnie own a 50th Anniversary Edition Camero. His warmth, humor, and kindness touched everyone who had the privilege to know him. He approached life with an open heart and a gentle spirit, leaving a profound impact on his family and friends. The community is invited to join us in honoring Lewis's life and legacy at a committal service on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at 10:00 AM at the West Virginia National Cemetery in Puntytown, WV, where full military rites will be accorded by the United States Army and Belington American Legion Post# 96 also family and friends can come together to share stories and memories of a man whose laughter and compassion touched countless lives. He will be laid to rest in the cemetery following services. The Kittle Family Funeral Home 265 Beech Ave., in Philippi is honored to be assisting the family with arrangements.
