Hiram "Hi" Covell Jr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a proud lifelong resident of Chardon, peacefully passed away on July 18, 2025, at the age of 96 at UH Geauga Medical Center.

Born on April 30, 1929, to Hiram and Josephine (nee: Burda) Covell Sr. in Newbury, Ohio, "Hi" was a proud graduate of Chardon High School. After high school, he served his country in the U.S. Army, an experience that instilled in him a deep sense of duty, responsibility, and service. "Hi" would carry these values throughout his life, dedicating much of his career to serving the Chardon community.

He was the Superintendent of Streets for the City of Chardon, where his hard work and dedication ensured the smooth operation of his hometown for many years. "Hi" was also a dedicated member of the Chardon Fire Department and served as the sexton of the Chardon Municipal Cemetery, as well as the street department supervisor. His steady and reliable presence in these roles earned him the respect and admiration of his neighbors and friends.

In October of 1950, "Hi" married Delores K. Maltry, the love of his life, in Willoughby, Ohio. They spent 74 wonderful years together, sharing a life built on mutual love and respect. Delores preceded "Hi" in death on July 24, 2024, and their love left an indelible mark on their family and all who knew them.

He found great joy in family fishing trips, especially to the waters of Canada and Trent River, where he made memories that will live on for generations.

He is survived by his son, Tom Covell of Chardon; daughter, Debbie McBride of Chardon; grandchildren, Scott McBride, Brian McBride, Nicole Covell Miller, and Michelle Covell; and great-grandchildren, Sarah McBride, Chloe Covell, Faith Ball, and Quinn Gibson. His legacy of love, hard work, and quiet service will continue to be felt by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Private family services will be held.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Burr Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
